Whittier Neighborhood Association
General Membership Meeting
July 18, 2007

MINUTES

1.     Justin Marks, WNA President, welcomed everyone and announced that he has resigned as President. He encouraged people to become a WNA Board member. Next month's meeting will be about Greenprint Denver and is open to all Denver residents.

2. Carla Madison, City Councilwoman, introduced herself. She said she can be contacted at carla.madison@ci.denver.co.us.

3. Officer Gary Ayers, Police Department - There has been a resurgence in gang activity. More tagging and violence between gangs is occuring. Call the police if you see any gang-related graffiti. Examples are "Oldies 13" in black paint, "CHI" or "CH 30" in red paint, "Bloods" or "CK". If you see or hear anything suspicious, please call 720-913-2000 to report it. You can request that the police not come to your house.

4. Bethany Gravell, Denver Museum of Nature & Science - Presented plans for improvements to the museum. These include repairs, a new Science Education Center, new exhibit halls, an underground storage facility, and reconfiguring spaces. They have requested $50 million as part of the Infrastructure Priorities Bond Issue. Contact George Sparks, President, at george.sparks@dmns.org with any questions.

5. Angela Davis - Metro Volunteers is part of the Hands On Network. They have chosen Manual High School for an improvement project. There are three phases: physical improvements, creating a youth leadership group, and technology improvements. Volunteers are needed to participate in the project. Aug. 4 and 8 will be prep days - cleaning, sanding, taping, priming. Aug. 9th will be painting halls and offices, and also exterior painting. The work will be done in the morning. To volunteer for the Manual Makeover, call 303-282-1234 x307.

6. Bob Sperling, Friends of Granny Flats - City is currently in the process of reviewing zoning. This hasn't been done since 1950's. Currently R2 allows two families in a duplex to live on one lot, but does not allow one building behind another to have two families. These second buildings are called Accessory Dwelling Units (ADU's) or "granny flats". Aurora and Arvada recently approved granny flats. Denver will probably approve, also, but they don't know exactly what will be approved. They are putting together a recommendation. For more information, contact bobsperling@msn.com.
